Monthly Meetings

Our monthly meetings are normally held on the third Wednesday of the Month,
February – November, 10am – noon and are open to everyone.
Venue – our Learning Centre at the Seventh Day Adventist Church,
118 Apirana Avenue (Corner Eastview Road and Apirana Avenue), Glen Innes.
We may feature an invited speaker, generally from the Computing, IT or industry with a strong computing flavour or else hold a “Demonstration and Discussion” seminar on a computing topic.
The June meeting traditionally doubles as the Annual General Meeting.

Activity Updates

We have some other courses coming up early October that we need to notify you about.

Wednesday 9th October at 10 until 11am we will be holding our next Device/Coffee and Learn/Problem solving day when you bring your device and questions for us to solve.

Wednesday 16th October we have two meetings of interest. In the morning 10-12 noon our monthly meeting will feature Cyber Week on Security and Potential Cyber Attacks. We have been provided with a PowerPoint Slide presentation which Ken Norton will present assisted by Noel which highlights awareness of security and strong passwords.

In the afternoon 1.30-4pm Sue La Roche will hold her workshop on Android Phones- Photos to Windows Computer, one session for $10. This course is now full but a new registration of interest could pick up a cancellation.

In November, depending on interest Sue La Roche will set up a photobook workshop of 2 three hour sessions to produce a small picture book with minimum text for starters. If you are interested, register through the website, the SNEB voicemail 528 2851 or notify our Course Manager (Daphne Wood dw36@xtra.co.nz )

Interested? Hope we have inspired you with one of the above courses.

Latest

At our September meeting, our speaker was Grant Stevens of Eden Computers, who gave us a most informative talk on a favourite subject of his, Winston Churchill. He demonstrated his Hover Board which was fascinating and he brought along his e-scooter which he did not demonstrate! His presentation concluded with some useful computing tips and tricks.

Becky Gillanders of Edmund Hillary Retirement Village again brought us a wonderful morning tea. Many thanks, Becky.

At our August meeting, our speaker was Gavin of Cartridge World, Remuera, who gave us a most informative talk on printers, inks and toners. A few interesting facts: Cartridge World (CW) uses quality pigment inks, not water-based dye inks, and they are guaranteed.  Ink cartridges can be used up to 5 times, possibly 10 times, and are filled by precision machines, not by hand. CW has 30 different types of ink to use in refills. Laser printers use a toner powder instead of ink, and in a small mono laser printer, a cartridge of this would print about 1000 pages. Unfortunately there is no recycling of used printers in New Zealand.

Our latest Coffee and Learn session, formerly known as a Drop-in Device Day, was on 14th August, when some of our members called in to get help from our resident experts. They went home happy, their problems solved.

We had a Genealogy Interest Group on 19th August, led by Janet Shaw. A small number of members came along and gained some insights into their family history.

Sue La Roche gave a group of 13 members an overview of Android phones on Wednesday 21st August. The members brought their own phones and followed Sue’s instructions. A careful look at all the options on Settings revealed many useful features – for example, some of us immediately added some virus protection to our phones, or changed the size of the font, or the level of brightness. And much more!
